Governors
Sodbury Vale Federation – Governor Information
Horton CEVA and St. John's Mead CEVC Primaries
The Role of Governors
School governors are volunteers. The governing body (comprised of parents, staff and members of the local community and churches) works in partnership to support the schools’ strategic vision.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Working together with the Executive Headteacher to set the future direction for the schools and decide how the schools' budgets should be spent.
- Making decisions collectively on matters such as performance targets, school policies and the Schools' Development Plans.
- Asking questions to challenge and support.
- Reviewing progress against the School Development Plan and the schools' budget and objectives.
- Monitoring the impact that the schools' policies have on pupil outcomes. Often this is through visits to schools and meeting with staff and children.
- Responding to inspection recommendations.
- Attending monthly meetings (usually Tuesday early evenings).
- Reviewing and responding to documents in preparation for meetings.
It is important to note that school governors lead schools, they do not manage them. The day-to-day management of the school is the responsibility of the Executive Headteacher and the senior leadership team.
Becoming a governor
Being part of a school governing body is greatly rewarding and appreciated. We welcome parents and members of the local community to join. It can be useful to talk to your employer as many employers recognise the role of school governors as useful work or community experience and may offer paid leave for governor duties. To find out more about becoming a school governor, please contact the clerk or chair via the schools’ offices:

Further information can also be found on the South Glos website.
Vacancies
We currently have vacancies for Foundation Governors (assigned by the church).
When there is a vacancy for a parent governor, all parents / guardians will be informed in order to have a chance to stand for election.
Horton School Governors are federated with St John’s Mead Primary School Governors and are called Sodbury Vale Governing Body.
